That Expression
Discovery moved through Chloe all at once, bright as lamplight catching glass. Standing beside Harriet Bloom's crowded archive table, she bent over the map and her open notebook until the old phrase stopped sounding like a fragment and began to feel like an instruction. "Harriet, this wasn't just a note," she said, already halfway to certainty. "It's a direction." When she traced the mention of the western steps and wondered aloud whether the second gift had not been hidden so much as waiting to be remembered, Harriet saw the change immediately: the sharpened focus, the sudden spark, the look of someone already following the next thread in her mind. By the time Chloe straightened with notebook in hand and said that Willowmere was not finished with them yet, the room itself seemed charged with that familiar town magic, as though the secret had finally found the right person to overhear it.
