The First Word
When Chloe opened her notebook that morning, she found there was nowhere left to go: every page held some scrap of her becoming. She turned the filled book in her hands with a quiet astonishment, as if the weight of it had changed overnight, and then walked down to the little stationery shop to choose another. Back home, with Luna keeping her usual watch nearby, she laid the fresh notebook open to its first blank page and sat for a long moment before writing anything at all. There were many possible first sentences, but only one word arrived without strain. When she wrote "Home," it did not feel like a conclusion so much as a truth she had finally caught up to. The room stayed still around her, gentle and ordinary, while something inside her settled into place.
