The Garden Glows
The Willowmere Community Garden has never looked more alive. Strings of warm fairy lights drape through the trellises as dusk settles over the beds and benches. Marco stands at the head of a long wooden table laden with crusty bread, salads, roasted vegetables, and bowls of pastries—he has outdone himself, and his grin says he knows it. Nearby, Mr. Chen sips tea beside a smiling Dev, their quiet companionship a language all its own. Father Bernard and Harriet Bloom argue cheerfully over the age of an elm tree, decades of friendship sharpening every barb into affection. Detective Park patrols the perimeter with a clipboard, muttering about security vulnerabilities. Rosie darts through the crowd with a sparkler and a cupcake, while Gerald Hooper watches from the edge, holding a small paper plate and a smile that looks almost like peace. Chloe stands with her blue notebook in hand, watching it all, and whispers to herself the word she has been learning to claim: home.
