What the Neighbors Kept
Word spread quickly through Willowmere. Within two days of Chloe's door-to-door visits, people began surfacing things they hadn't looked at in decades — shoeboxes from hall closets, envelopes tucked behind bookshelves, recipe cards still faintly dusted with flour. Mr. Chen found a stack of photographs he'd forgotten he owned. Someone had saved a 1952 church program from St. Brendan's spring blessing of the garden. A handwritten recipe for garden potluck punch, dated 1954, arrived wrapped in a paper bag. At the bakery, Marco held a photograph of the old storefront and went quiet in a way he almost never did. "My grandfather baked the bread for that potluck," he said softly. "I never knew." Chloe wrote it all down. She had thirty days to make something of it — and she hadn't expected so many people to say yes.
