Thirty Days
The heritage designation was within reach, but only if the neighborhood could prove its history in thirty days. Chloe spread her notes across the kitchen table and looked at the scope of it: seventy-plus years of a community's life, scattered across shoeboxes and attic corners and the backs of people's memories. She started at the beginning — door to door, flyer in hand — asking neighbors to dig out whatever they had. An elderly woman on Alder Street remembered a box her mother had kept. At Marco's, he leaned on the counter and listened with his arms crossed, half skeptical and half moved. "One shoebox at a time," Chloe told him. It wasn't much of a plan. But it was a start.
