Day One
There is a particular kind of quiet that lives in archives — the hush of things waiting to be remembered. Chloe and Harriet arrived at the Willowmere City Archives the morning after the neighbourhood meeting, Harriet's cloth tote already packed with a list of record series numbers she had memorised overnight. They settled at a long wooden table and began. Harriet narrated in brisk, precise sentences — the language of a woman who had spent her life organising knowledge — while Chloe wrote everything down in her blue notebook, page after page of dates and deed references and careful questions. By afternoon, the table was buried in ledgers. And then Harriet lifted one faded document and went very still. The words were typed, slightly crooked on the page, from a machine that no longer existed: *Donated in perpetuity to the people of Willowmere, for use as community garden and green space.* Chloe looked at Harriet. Harriet looked at Chloe. The afternoon light fell long across the archives. 'We have the beginning of something real,' Harriet said. 'Come back tomorrow. There's a second box.'
