Chloe's Corner
Chloe knelt in the cool dusk soil with Mr. Chen's seed packet in her hand and the little blue notebook tucked against her side, trying to treat the moment with the care it seemed to ask for. Rosie hovered beside her like an officious guardian of miracles, insisting there was a hopeful part to planting and making it sound like a matter of strict local policy. When Chloe covered the seeds, she did it gently, as if she were closing a door softly behind something alive. Then she looked up and saw the painted marker Rosie had already staked into the bed: CHLOE'S CORNER. The words startled a laugh out of her before they reached somewhere deeper, because the sign was silly and earnest and impossibly kind all at once. "Thank you," she told Rosie, and when she admitted that no one had ever given her a corner before, the truth of it settled over the garden like evening light. Rosie only squared her shoulders and told her not to forget where it was, and Chloe understood that in Willowmere even a scrap of painted wood could feel like being claimed by home.
