What the Garden Knows
Dev arrived with his father and something neither of them had mentioned before: a letter. His grandmother had written it in the summer of 1963, the year the community garden first bloomed, and she had kept it folded in a drawer ever since. She was a small woman in a rose-coloured sari, her hands trembling slightly as she held it out, as if she had been waiting sixty years for someone to ask. The letter was not formal or polished. It was honest. It said the garden did not belong to anyone. It belonged to everyone who had ever needed it. Chloe read those words and felt something shift quietly inside her chest. Dev's father turned away and pressed his cap to his eyes. Nobody said anything for a long while, and somehow that silence said everything the letter couldn't.
