The Record Speaks
Chloe had not expected the church archives to smell quite so much like old paper and quiet certainty, but she found she didn't mind. Father Bernard moved through the shelves of bound ledgers with the calm of a man who had always known exactly where things were kept. Then he stopped, leaned over the desk, and pressed one finger to a line of faded handwriting. June the fourteenth, 1951 — a blessing of the Willowmere Community Garden, signed by a Father Doyle who had been gone for forty years but had, apparently, done his paperwork. Father Bernard looked up over his reading glasses with the faint, pleased expression of a man who had just won an argument he hadn't known he was in. He offered the ledger to Chloe with both hands, like something that deserved to be held carefully. She took it the same way. Some documents feel like evidence. Some feel like witnesses.
