Chloe in Willowmere

On a mild afternoon, Chloe finds Mr. Chen sitting quietly on the garden bench, cradling a worn cloth pouch in both hands. He opens it to reveal small dark seeds — not from any catalog, but carried by hand from his mother's village the morning his family left China. As he speaks, his voice is unhurried, almost reverent. He points to a trellis where bean plants climb in neat spirals, and tells Chloe that every summer those beans grow, and every summer his mother is somehow present in the garden. Chloe listens without interrupting, her notebook resting open on her knee, and finally says softly that the seeds remember where they came from.
