Mr. Chen arrived at the garden at 6:47am, as he had every morning for eleven years. The soil in the heirloom tomato bed had been disturbed. The seed packet was gone — San Marzano 1962, seeds he had been saving for a decade. He stood there for a long time looking at the empty bed. He didn't say anything to anyone. Which, those who knew him understood, was far worse than if he had.
