Same Time Next Week
In the gentle bakery light, Father Bernard looked across the coffee cups and said the thing no one had yet said aloud: "You seem settled." Chloe answered, "I think I am," and the words landed in her with the quiet weight of truth, as if she were hearing the shape of her own life for the first time. There was no ceremony in it, only warmth, the ordinary holiness of being known by someone kind. Bernard smiled, pleased but not surprised, and asked, "Good. Same time next week for coffee?" Chloe said, "Yes," with an ease that would once have frightened her, because the promise of next week now felt less like a trap than a homeward path she was willing to walk.
