Where It Belongs
Father Bernard finds the third mysterious marigold sitting quietly on his desk at St. Brendan's Parish Office, left without a sound or a note. He unwraps it carefully — the petals are still warm, golden-orange and impossibly fresh — and holds it up to the window light with the tenderness of a man who has learned to read the small things. 'A marigold,' he says softly, 'still warm.' He carries it down the empty nave of the church in the late afternoon light, both hands cupped gently around the stem as though it were something sacred. He sets it on the white altar cloth beneath the crucifix, centered and still, and stands back to look at it. The stained glass casts colored light across the flower. Someone in Willowmere is leaving flowers for people who need them — and Father Bernard suspects it was never really about the flowers at all. 'Each one a little answered prayer we didn't know we made,' he murmurs. The church smells of old wood, candle wax, and something like hope.
